Each state has its own version of a small claims court. Small claims cases are usually civil litigations (where money is the source of the dispute) below a certain dollar amount threshold. For example in California, a small claims case must be below $10,000. Small claims court is meant to be limited in procedures, and in many states, you can pursue a claim in small claims court without the need for a lawyer.
